40 YEARS OF CYCLING
Deeside Olympic has been at the forefront of the cycling scene in North Wales for some 55 years now. As a club we have had strong links to Graham Weigh’s bike shop in Shotton for over thirty years and for the last 7 we have raced as Graham Weigh Cycles Racing Team.
The club caters for cyclists of all abilities. From those starting with the club for the first time to those who have been racing for years.
From those starting out on the road and looking for some guidance, training tips or just looking to have a chin wag over a coffee and cake on a Saturday to the more experienced racers, the club caters for riders of all abilities.
If you’re new to the club, feel free to come along to either of our rides (see below for more details). Hopefully you’ll like what you see and will want to join. The club charges an annual membership fee of just £15.
How can I ride with Graham Weigh Cycles RT / Deeside Olympic?
We have two main club runs each week – these are on a Saturday and Sunday morning as well as the midweek ride on Wednesday.
Wednesday – The ride leaves the England side of Saltney Ferry bridge at 9:30 and usually is a 45 mile ride into Cheshire countryside with a cafe stop at Farndon Village.
Saturday – The ride leaves from outside the Grosvenor Arms hotel in Pulford, just outside Chester at 9:30am. We follow broadly the same route every week heading out along the flat Cheshire lanes to the Ice Cream Farm near Tattenhall. We’ll stop here for a coffee (or two), a slice of cake and a good chat before heading home. We take things pretty leisurely on a Saturday which makes this run perfect for first timers. We average around 17mph for the 30 or so miles to and from the Ice Cream Farm and will make sure that no one EVER gets left behind. We’ll make sure any first timers are looked after and introduced to the group. Recent weeks have seen big turn outs on these rides, sometimes up to 25 riders making for a great social atmosphere.
Sunday – The ride leaves from the Tesco Superstore in Broughton Retail Park at 9:30am. The Sunday rides are a bit longer than the Saturday runs and we cover different routes each week. Sometimes heading in to North Wales, sometimes into Cheshire. During the Autumn and Winter monthes these rides are ridden at a relatvily leisurely pace and we usually cover around 50-60 miles in distance. During the Spring and Summer months the pace of the group varies – some riders will be training for races whilst some will be looking for a more leisurely ride. Whatever your aim for a Sunday morning, there’ll always be someone in the same frame of mind to ride with.
As well as our Facebook group, the club is also on Strava. Search for Graham Weigh Racing Team to join and find other members.
